Turkey's main opposition party, the secularist CHP, said on Tuesday it would not attend parliament during presidential elections and would not support Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul's candidacy.

CHP Deputy Chairman Mustafa Ozyurek told a televised news conference the party would boycott receptions and foreign trips if Gul is elected president.

Turkey's secular elite, including army generals, distrust Gul's Islamist past.
