Witnesses in Lima reported feeling buildings shake, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
It cited the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center as saying the quake struck at 1753 GMT about 110 miles (177 km) south south-east of the capital Lima.
