Millions of people have arrived to Washington from all around the world, and everything is organized to the second. The full day program, the day of his life, started for Barack Obama at 8:45am in a Catholic church, and ends with an inauguration ball which starts at 8pm. In the mean time Obama will have lunch with the current president George W. Bush and will participate in a ceremony at 3:30pm at which he will officially become the 44th president of the United States of America.
Why are Americans proud of Barack Obama?
The new American president is the personification of the American dream. He grew up in the middle class, and he did not, like the journalists in Washington like to say, eat with silver cutlery. Obama experienced hardships due to the colour of his skin, but does not carry deep scars from that period, and in reality has a very real picture on the moral state of the American society.
He leaned towards top education, which was what initially raised him above average, and enabled him to reach high politics. His success is really a message that everyone in the USA has the opportunity to reach the stars, even though he does not have the face of Michael Jordan, speed like Michael Phelps or skills like Tiger Woods.
For Americans it is very important to show their society as an absolute role model to the world, and the direction that should be followed in the world. Some foreign analysts in fact explain this moment in the USA as a wish to keep the current state of things, not like Obama’s slogan says: “Change”.
The United States of America is losing its position of total domination in the world, and the ordinary citizens are becoming more and more aware of it. The non realistic low price of petrol (three times cheaper than some EU nations), cheaper cars (half the price of some European nations), high technological achievements are some of the things that US citizens enjoy. That difference needs to be made somewhere.
No thinking about radical changes
If the roles are slightly changed, and say some other power(s) take control of world currents, the much announced crisis could seriously threaten the elementary foundation of the American society (amongst other things cheap fuel).
Currently US standards are very high, and it will be hard to keep them that way, let alone increase them. Even ordinary citizens of the USA who have a somewhat wider scope of thinking, are aware of the current state of things and the complexity of the situation that their nation is in.
Because of that, it is very important for them to show themselves of the promised land of democracy in which everyone can achieve their dreams with their efforts. The change that has been announced, is really aimed at keeping the current global position, and not a radical turnaround in global and economic thinking.
Maybe he really thinks what he says
It is interesting to observe in the last few days, in the USA, the analyses of Obama’s speeches. Every word said was analysed from the start of the campaign to today, as well as every facial expression and every hand movement. The responsibility of expression is key for his credibility and it is fantastic that the analyses are approached with such surgical precision. It is interesting to note just how many politicians have contradicted themselves in a short period of time, but for now we have yet to see the same from Obama. Maybe he really thinks what he says.
