German police clashed with left-wing opponents of a march by about 6,000 rightists on Saturday marking the anniversary of the Allied bombing of Dresden during World War Two.

A police spokesman said the leftists tipped over two police vehicles and threw bottles and rocks as authorities struggled to keep the two groups separated.

Several police and demonstrators were injured in the scuffles and some people were detained, but exact details were not available, the spokesman said.

A third group held a separate largely peaceful march to commemorate the 1945 bombings that killed an estimated 25,000 people. British and American bombers attacked Dresden in three waves on Feb. 13-14, 1945.
