Roland Garros is his 14th title of the Grand Slam and only a part of his rich career that began in 1987 when he picked up a racket.

The determined Swiss, Roger Federer, has become the best tennis player in history after winning the Roland Garros, a tournament played on clay which he never managed to win in the past years because Rafael Nadal would always get in his way. But this year, he got his opportunity, he took it and marked the whole past week.

Brilliant Federer Clinches First French Open Title

King of all courts

  • Australian Open - 2004, 2006, 2007
  • Roland Garros - 2009
  • Wimbledon - 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007
  • US Open - 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008

And not just the week. His success will definitely be in competition for the sports event of the year because the tears at the end of the match proves that he is not a cold-blooded robot, as people like to say. No, he is a man of flesh and blood, who hides his every feeling during matches because this makes him feel more dominant and mysterious.

His tennis story began in 1987 when he was six years old. She showed what kind of a player he will be  when he defeated all the older boys and at 14 years old won the title of Swiss Champion. He soon grew out of the borders of Switzerland and in the last junior season, being not even 18, gained his title in Wimbledon.

Still, many have won titles in junior competitions, but did not carry on their successes in the senior competition. Considering the fact that he is not an athlete with extraordinary physical predispositions such as exceptional speed or strength, Federer reached the top a bit slower than his successful successors. But once he reached the top, he was not letting go.

He won the first ATP tournament in Milan in 2001 after a victory over Julien Boutter and he won his first Grand Slam in 2003. Of course, it was Wimbledon, a tournament that he feels most comfortable with because grass is perfect for a player who bases his game on intelligence and perfectionism. He will always remember that title because he won it after finals with Mark Philippoussis. The fact that he lost only one set in the entire tournament proves how superior he was in reaching the top.

VIDEO: Roger Federer Wins Roland Garros

Such a development of events was explained by the fact that he does not have an opponent who could be a valid adversary, but the future development of events soon enough showed what it was all about. It was in Federer and his genius that was evident in every tournament and every match.

The following years were his and his alone and then his greatest opponent, Rafael Nadal, the king of

Records

  • First tennis player to have earned more than eight million in a year and 43 million in his career
  • Won more than ten tournaments three years in a row
  • Won 24 finals in a row
  • Five Wimbledon titles in a row (equal to Bjorn Borg)
  • Five US Open titles in a row
  • The first to win the Grand Slam without a single lost set after 27 years. The fist one who managed that
  • was Bjorn Borg
  • 55 victories in a row on concrete
  • 237 weeks at number 1 spot on the ATP list
Roland Garros arrived. The rivalry in the style of Sampras and Agassi ended a couple of years back and in turn they got rivalry of equals. But, getting back to the champion 2004. In that year Federer won three out of four Grand Slams, which only Wilander managed in 1988. He lost only Roland Garros, thanks to Gustav Kuerten.

Soon, he became the best tennis player in history, earning eight million dollars per season, which is not surprising because he celebrated in 24 consecutive finals and was simply unbeatable. He made it to the top on February 2, 2004, overtaking Andy Roddick. Although many would have lost their motive to carry on, he did not and continued to train equally, not allowing to happen to him what happened to Hewitt, Safin or Roddick. He did not let his guard down and did not make any wrong turns.

He was awarded for this year by year, he won everything that could be won and broke many records. He became the only tennis player in history who managed to win three Grand Slams in one season. Still, this was not an end to his records, or his motives.

In 1980 Bjorn Borg won the Grand Slam without losing any set. Federer did the same in 2007 and in the same year he managed to win everything but Roland Garros due to Nalad, who was becoming an increasing adversary on other courts as well as clay.

Breaking all records and is not even 30 years old

Then the year 2008 came along and with it, the fall of the big king. His opponents studied him, analysed him, lived with his tapes. He lost the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic, in the semi-finals, which put a stop to his streak of ten consecutive finals. He again won the US Open, but then came along Roland Garros and Rafael Nadal. Of course, he lost, but he tried to find consolation at Wimbledon. However, the Spaniard won there too, and after the Olympic games in Beijing, he also took away his first spot on the ATP list, after 237 weeks!

After that, Federer had a kind of mental melt-down, many others defeated him, including Croatia’sReuters-.--.-Roger Federer cries as he holds the trophy after winning his men's final against Robin Soderling at the French Open tennis tournament Ivo Karlovic.  Andy Murray defeated him three times in a row and Nadal defeated him wherever he wanted. Pete Sampras, however, kept saying that Federer would definitely reach and even exceed his record, while Agassi claimed that he had never played against a better tennis player. But all this did not give his confidence a boost, nor did the numerous injuries that came one after the other.

Then the year 2009 came along and with it, new defeats. He was left without the Australian Open and some other tournaments before that. Everybody wrote him off, saying Murray and Djokovic would come ahead of him by the end of the year and that the Swiss will consider retiring. And then the Roland Garros arrived.

Robin Soderling created a miracle and defeated Nadal, which opened the way for Federer. Federer saw the chance and decided to grab it aggressively and decisively. He won the tournament that he never won before, he became the sixth tennis player in history who won all tournaments, the second tennis player in history who won 14 tournaments, and the youngest to have managed all that. It is probable that he will make it to his 15th Grand Slam before he turns 30. He is certainly the greatest, not just by numbers, but also by his game and what his opponents say.
