Jamaica's former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell finished fourth in a rare attempt at 400 at the Sydney Track Classic on Saturday.

Powell, who is in Australia for two meetings while preparing for August's world championships in Berlin, finished just out of the medals after opting to enter the one-lap race instead of his preferred sprints.

Australia's Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker chalked up his seventh straight win this season with a clearance of 5.95 metres, but failed to break his personal best of 6.06 so made no attempt at Sergei Bubka's world record (6.15), which has become his life's goal.

"I'm not saying I can jump 6.16 this year but definitely on my form I'm showing it can happen," he told reporters.

Australia's Sally McLellan, a silver medallist in the 100 hurdles at Beijing last year, won three events on Saturday, the hurdles, the 100 sprint and the relay.

The three Olympians will all head to Melbourne next week for Thursday's IAAF meeting at Olympic Park.
