SPLIT, CROATIA - The largest event in Croatian sports history, the World Handball Championship was opened at Split’s Spaladium Stadium, and the greeting speeches did not pass without the honest reaction of those gathered on the grandstands, on which you can always count on to give their opinion without hesitation.
The public was addressed by Sandi Sola, the president of the Croatian Handball Federation and the president of the HIS, Hassan Moustaf. Before they spoke a long dance presentation was held, which the choreographers conceived as presenting all participants in the tournament.
The twelve thousand people attended the event, chanted the slogan of one of the sponsors during Moustaf’s speech, but they were not so easy on the organizers or the translators.
Translation that ruins reputation
They whistled at the representatives of the HRS, and even representatives from the cabinet. Dragan Primorac received a salvo of whistles when he mentioned premier Ivo Sanader and the cabinet, which was not lessened by praising the fans of Torcida.
The translator, who translated the words of the Croatian officials into English, seems to have somewhat less knowledge of the language, which the public did not oversee and stopped the translation with their loud whistling, after which she could only announce Hassan Moustaf.
However, even his speech was not translated into Croatian in a way fit for the event.
The Sportfive company is responsible for conveying the television broadcast of the event to 155 nations all over the world. As a comparison, the broadcast of the last World Handball Championship in Germany went to 143 countries.
