Chelsea narrowed Manchester United's lead in the Premier League to four points on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory at Portsmouth.
Didier Drogba's second half goal was enough to seal a fourth consecutive win for Chelsea since Guus Hiddink replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari as manager.
Chelsea moved to 58 points from 28 games with Manchester United, who play at Newcastle United on Wednesday, on 62 having played two games fewer.
Third-placed Liverpool were also in action at home to Sunderland in a later match.
Arsenal's recent goal famine ended when they beat bottom club West Bromwich Albion 3-1 with Nicklas Bendtner twice on target.
