Where Has The Piran Bay Humpback Whale Gone?
Published: February 27, 2009 14:56h

PIRAN BAY, CROATIA – Employees of the “Rezidencija Skiper” restaurant at the coast in Alberi, in Istria, have been fortunate enough to enjoy a rare sight these last few days - a protected humpback whale. Although its appearance in Piran Bay caused humorous comments, because it was not determined if it would “belong” to Croatia or Slovenia, if the whale does not find its way towards the open sea, it might be left without any food once the weather gets warmer.

Employees of the “Rezidencija Skiper” restaurant were the first to spot the 15-metre humpback Pixsell-.--.-A humpback whalewhale wandering in Piran Bay just several metres away from the shore, after which both Croatian and Slovene ships tried to direct it towards the open sea. However, the disoriented whale kept spinning in circles.

On Thursday, one of the restaurant staff members, Lino Klimic, said the whale spent an hour and a half on the surface, after which it dived and disappeared.

- A couple was in a boat on Thursday, they took photos of the whale and swam to it. Actually, the man was swimming. Soon, the whale dived under and I suppose it went after the swimmer, but not to bite it, because the man was heading for the boat. Later, it was out of sight. We watched with binoculars and saw its back. It is gone today. The sea is quiet, and the weather is sunny and a bit foggy – Klimic described the “encounter” with the humpback whale.

Guests of the restaurant have a view of the bay and have been following the lost whale for several days. However, it seems that the whale, whether it be Slovene or Croatia, finally left for the open sea.
