Published: August 10, 2009 19:54h

ZAGREB, CROATIA – The funeral of the icon of the Croat Sprin, Savka Dabcevic-Kucar, aook place at Zagreb’s Mirogoj cemetery on Monday. Family, friends, politicians and numerous citizens turned up to say farewell to her, including Croatian President Stjepan Mesic.

A commemoration organised by the Croatian People’s Party (HNS) of which Kucar was honorary president, took place at the City Assembly in the morning hours. The commemoration was attended by many HNS members, Savka`s family, Croatian scientists, Anto Djapic, Antun Vuljic, Zlatko Kramaric, Parliament vice president Vladimir Seks, Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic and many more.

- The Croatian people respected you, you became a legend of Croatian history in your lifetime, you were and remain a historic figure, you were and remain a leader – Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said about Dabcevic-Kucar.

- Heading the cabinet of the Socialist Republic of Croatia at the end of the 60s, Savka Dabcevic-Kucar wisely lead the society towards democracy, but she was forced to stand down under the ossified policy of the state top, which failed to follow her principles. And it could have prevented the bloody breakdown 20 years later by listening to her ideas – he added.

One of the most important politicians in Croatian history, Savka Dabcevic-Kucar, passed away on August 6 in her Zagreb apartment at the age of 86. Savka will be remembered for heading a movement called the Croatian Spring since 1971. Her doctorate thesis was entitled “J.M. Keynes – Theorist Of National Capitalism”, which made her famous as one of the first female economy doctorate holders in Croatia.
