Snow Cover Turns Dalmatia White Zadar Covered in Snow

SPLIT, CROATIA - During the night, snow painted Split white. If we were giving a short meteorological report, we would say that last night, from Tuesday to Wednesday, somewhere around 2am, light snow started to fall in Split carried by a north-easterly wind, only to totally turn the streets white by 4am. The strong winds pushed the snow to the ground, which had totally given way to the white covering.

Besides the delight at the snow, it also has its darker side. Not used to the snow, citizens are counting the number of visits to Split’s trauma ward at the Firule hospital.
However, it is important to explain to citizens in the northern parts of Croatia how Split’s residents experience snow. It is always a welcome guest in Split, probably because it falls once every few years, and only lasts for a short time, because the surrounding mountains Mosor and Kozjak, as well as the proximity to the sea, rarely offer this part of Dalmatia to feel the joys of winter.

Day without school for enjoying the snow

Of course, the children are those who look forward to the snow in Split the most. In Split there is an unwritten rule, when snow falls, only the children of strict parents must go to school, who teach their children in these rare and happy moments that school is the most important. The other lucky ones spend the day on the streets making snowmen or having snow fights.

However, snow in Dalmatia does have its dark side. The citizens are not used to it, and the citizens, contrary to their will, are counting the number of people that end up in the trauma ward of Split’s Firule hospital, because broken arms and legs are not uncommon. This is why it is useful to warn that people need to be especially careful today, especially drivers, because the snow will soon turn into ice, and then as we know the streets are slippery and dangerous.

The snow also surprised Sibenik’s residents, where school has also been cancelled, and in Zadar the airport has been closed due to ice. Take a look at how Dalmatia looks covered in ice in the photo galleries: Snow Cover Turns Dalmatia White and Zadar Covered in Snow.
