ZAGREB, CROATIA - The Croatian president Stjepan Mesic has not yet brought the decision to strip the medals off generals Vladimir Zagorec and Mirko Norac due to being busy, but will do so soon, in the next few days, according to the president’s information office.
Why Zagorec and Norac
President Mesic will take Vladimir Zagorec’s medals away due to inappropriate behaviour, because he did not respond to a court request. However, what is the reason for taking away Mirko Norac’s medals at this time, who has been in prison for a while, was not explained.According to article 36 of the law on medals and recognitions, the president can make this decision himself, and the state committee for medals is not needed.
The decision takes effect as soon as the president signs it, and is announced in the official state newspaper to inform the public.
Vladimir Zagorec and Mirko Norac will receive the president’s decision by mail, with the notice that they are bound to return the medals. However, if they do not want to, nobody will physically take them away.
Besides them, the president has only taken medals away from the deceased general Ivan Korade, 7 of his 13 medals to be precise, but his family has not returned them.
