Croatian President, Stjepan Mesic, laid a wreath and lit candles at the site of a mass grave at Ovcara, saying that Croatian soldiers and civilians killed in the attack on the city of Vukovar gave their lives not only for Croatia, but also for Europe.
- The same Europe that kept silent while Vukovar was being destroyed - said the president Stjepan Mesić, adding that it would be good for Europe, but also for the world, if what happened in Vukovar in 1991 served as a lesson.
- I hope that all European authorities recognize this - he said.
- This is the last time that I am visiting Ovcara as the President, but I will continue coming - Mesic said at the gathering. Ovcara, near Vukovar, is where on November 20, 1991 the members of the former JNA and Serbian paramilitary troops killed around 200 patients from a Vukovar hospital.
