Reacting to Slovene accusations, Croatian cabinet spokesperson Mehun said Croatia was created on the foundations of anti-fascism.
ZAGREB, CROATIA – Reacting to Slovene claims, which state that Croatia has never clearly disowned the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) [a puppet state o Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during World War II, from 1941 until 1945], spokesperson of the Croatian government Zlatko Mehun said that Croatia was created on the foundations of anti-fascism, and those who want to imply otherwise are living in the distant past.
- On several occasions it was pointed out that the Croatian state was created on the foundations of anti-fascism, which actually is the case – Mehun told the Croatian Television, adding that those who are implying otherwise are living in the distant past.
- I believe all of us in this region are tired of such a past, we need to recognise it, we need to learn it, but we all nee to look into the European future – Mehun said.
In its records from a recent sitting, the committee for European and international issues of the Slovene National Council proposed MPs to “consider relations with Croatia in the light of its alleged NDH heritage”.
The records state that the NDH is still in a way present on the Croatian political scene and that today`s Croatia “has not apologised for the NDH crimes”.
