The candidacy of attorney Savic is disputable because she filed constitutional suits accusing Croatia of ethnic cleansing.
Independent MP Slaven Letica revealed at the recent session of the parliamentary Committee for the Constitution that Milka Savic, a Zagreb lawyer and candidate of the Serb National Council for the Croatian Constitutional Court, had filed several law suits demanding on behalf of her clients, Serb returnees and those who fled the country, the restoration of their tenant rights that had been revoked because of the policy of ethnic cleansing due to their nationality.
Savic: The law suits do not reflect my personal opinion
Savic herself says that in the 171 filed law suits she had mentioned ethnic cleansing as the reason for the loss of tenancy rights because her clients had demanded so.
-In suits I do not write my own opinion, but the opinion of my clients. The clients have the right, if they feel they are the victims of ethnic cleansing, to say so – Savic explained to the Vecernji list daily.
She believes that her candidacy should not be in question because of her work because she had only helped people, and as a constitutional court judge she would not be in a conflict of interest because such cases would not be presented to her.
She wrote suits for money or because she agreed with claims of Croatia’s genocide
Milka Savic deals with civil, labour and tenancy rights and represents the Serb Orthodox Church in cases of restoring its nationalised property.
Certain MPs believe that the fact that Savic had not warned her clients that law suits based on ethnic cleansing did not stand a chance of success, means that she had written them either for money or because she agreed with qualifications about the state and genocide.
Asked whether she believes the fact that in the law suits she had described Croatia as a country in which ethnic cleansing reigned was a problem, Savic said that that element had been created by politics and she had nothing do to with creating it.
SDSS and Milorad Pupovac support Savic
The Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) supports Savic and its president Milorad Pupovac will insist that she be elected. He will not consent to her being disqualified because of her involvement in proceedings that are of special importance for the Croatian judiciary.
