POREC, CROATIA - Even though she was a day late, Slavica Ecclestone did not wish to miss the decisive Davis Cup tennis match between Croatia and Chile in Porec. Accompanied by dear friends president of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Matesa and Slavko Rosenberger, she carefully observed Marin Cilic and Mario Ancic`s match against Chile`s Nicolas Massu and Paul Capdeville (6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4) from the VIP section, bravely cheering the Croats on.
After the match, the elegant Rijeka-born woman stepped out for some fresh air to light a cigarette. Smoking was not allowed in the sports hall or the salon, so esteemed guests had to step outside to the powerful wind for this “luxury”. Luckily, it was a sunny day on Saturday and as reporters waited to get the players` statements, Slavica was free to light up elegant eve cigarettes in peace.
Helps the sick
Although she is one of the most recognised and probably the wealthiest Croatian woman, she is not inaccessible as once would expect from a jet setter. A man approached her from Umag, asking for her help in organising medical care for his 41-year-old severely sick sister-in-law. According to him, the doctors in Croatia and Norway already “wrote her off”, but the family has contacted a London clinic, and the doctors will try saving her by performing stem cell transplant.
Without hesitating, Slavica agreed to help and sent her driver to get her a writing pad. The stranger,
who only said he lived between Umag and Norway, wrote down his address and walked away.
We asked Slavic, who attended many world tournaments and this was her first Davis Cup in Porec, if she thought it was possible to organise sports spectacles in the Porec sports hall.
- Of course. We Croats can do anything, motivation is the only necessary thing – Mrs. Ecclestone told us. She confirmed that she flew to Porec from London with her private jet, but added: “Nobody knows where I landed”, smiling. Delighted with Porec hospitality, she said that would not be able to watch Roko Karanusic and Ivo Karlovic play on Sunday, due to obligations. As we found out, she received an invitation for Zdravko Colic`s concert, but said she would not make it because of a tight schedule.
She has close friends in Porec, but she denied that she was staying with them. She was invited to the opening of a luxurious Porec restaurant DG, owned by Danijela and Drazn Golemovic, but we could not find out if she attended the private party for only the selected company.
After a brief conversation for Javno website, Slavica Ecclestone called her driver and they waited for the president of the Croatian Olympic Committee Zlatko Matesa, who joined them, probably for an Istria dinner.
