I believe in America. America has made my fortune. And I raised my daughter in the American fashion. I gave her freedom but I taught her never to dishonour her family. She found a "boy friend," not an Italian – who does not know this legendary quote form the start of the even more legendary Godfather by Francis Ford Coppola?
We decided to compile a list of several cult mafia themed films which you definitely have to watch.
If you already enjoyed them, we believe the next lines will make you reaffirm your desire to watch them again.
First on the list is the “Godfather” trilogy. The first part of the master-piece was made in 1972, featuring Marlon Brando, former sex symbol who charmed the audience at a late age with his rusty voice, then Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton and James Caan.
The plot takes place in America, following the chronology of the mafia Corleone family. Virgli Sollozzo of the Tattaglia family offers the Corleones a cut in the heroin business, but Don Vito does not agree… Nino Rota and Carmine Coppola`s music accompanies the film in all three sequels, while every part was made after the same-titled novel written by Mario Puzo.
A fantastic film which was shot after a true story and is of a recent date is surely “American Gangster”. Franco Lucas is an African-American played by Denzel Washington. Lucas managed to get half of New York hooked on heroin which he sold at affordable price. Russell Crowe took over the role of a police officer in Ridley Scott`s film, who gradually discovers where the heroin comes from.
“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster” is also a memorable quote, from “Goodfellas” by Martin Scorsese.
The 1990 film became famous by telling a mafia story about informant Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta, while the cast also included other celebrities like Danny De Vito, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. The interesting script was written according to true events described in Nicholas Pileggi`s novel.
Martin Scorsese`s film “The Departed” won the Oscar academy award in 2007 and featured Leonardo di Caprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Alec Baldwin.
The action goes down in the streets of Boston, where Franc Costello, an Irishman with an Italian surname, infiltrates his mole in the police force. A special recommendation for this film is the fact that it was enlisted in the 250 best films list according to the IMDB.
Mike Newell`s “Donnie Brasco” is surely not one of those films without character. Apart from the excellent and obligatory Al Pacino, who was born to play parts in gangster films, you will have the opportunity of seeing Johnny Depp and Michael Madsen.
This trio will tell the story of an FBI agent who infiltrated, you guessed it, the gangster Bonnano family, which was one of the top five families in the 70s that did dirty affairs.
Although the script was based on actual events, it turned out that some of the relationship between the characters have been changed.
“Once Upon A Time In America” is also a mandatory edition. Filmed in 1984, it premiered in Cannes, however, the 4-hour version was not satisfactory, therefore the film was reduced by 90 minutes before it was released in the USA, “depriving” the viewers of the rape scene. The plot is set in New York, where two young Jews, played by De Niro and James Woods, become the big kahunas of the gangster underground. The film was shot after an autobiographical novel The Hoods by a former gangster informant.
Crime drama “Carlito`s Way” by Brian De Palma was created in 1993 after a fabricated event, envisioned by judge Edwin Torres in his books.
Al Pacino plays Carlito Brigante, a drug dealer from Puerto Rico, who is pulled out of prison by attorney Dave Kleinfeld, after doing 5 years for possession of illegal substances. However, Carlito turns to old tricks upon being released…
The last, but not the least is “Untouchable”, also directed by Brian De Palma. This film about Al Capone, most famous gangster of all time, was filmed in 1987 after autobiographic records of Eliot Ness, who crited capturing Capone.
Fantastic actors featured in the starring roles Sean Connery, Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro, which is only a guarantee that the film will keep you up for two hours.
If you have not yet seen these films with stories from the underground, we advise you to act according to our instructions, you cannot go wrong.
After becoming hooked on the smell of cigarettes and guns, hurry and get the phenomenal “Casino”, “Scarface” and documentary “Gammora”.
